What Is a Designer?
At Patmos, being a designer is not limited to graphic or web design. Gestalting, the practice we explore, means weaving beautiful stories that bring people and communities to life, grounded in character, dedication, and sensibility. A designer brings these three qualities into motion by refining their individuality, taking initiative, and cultivating a sensitivity to beauty. No discipline is out of bounds if it serves that practice: creating graphics, designing websites, taking photographs, editing films, making books, thinking about spaces, designing products, and talking, learning, and working with others. To put into practice everything we can do in pursuit of Gestalting—that is what it means to be a designer at Patmos.
Why We Exist
Patmos exists for more than making designs or brands. What we are truly engaging with is a fundamental question about human existence: what do we live for? Working across philosophy, strategy, products, spaces, organizations, culture, and human relationships, we seek to awaken the vitality that lies deep within people and communities. Our practice goes beyond solving problems or making surface-level changes; it engages with how people live, what they value, and the future of communities themselves. We call this practice Gestalting. Gestalting means inspiring the possibilities of people and communities through Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. Truth emerges through character and individuality. Goodness emerges through dedication to others and to communities. Beauty stirs our sensibilities. As these qualities resonate, the relationships between people, society, and the world are gradually rewoven, opening new possibilities for the future. One person's sincere practice or small act of courage lights a spark in someone else, and that vitality spreads further. We believe this living continuity is a force that enriches people and communities. What grows through these accumulated acts is a story that brings life into motion. We want to nurture stories that are carried forward as memories and culture, rather than pursuing temporary results or trends. Creating stories that bring life into motion is why Patmos exists, and the Gestalting we seek to practice.
Why Are We Welcoming New Members?
We do not believe Gestalting can be realized by one person alone. People who develop brand strategies, weave words, design spaces, take photographs, make films, and create digital experiences bring different expertise and sensibilities while sharing a philosophy and moving toward a beautiful whole. That is what Gestalting means to us. It is also why we are always looking for new companions. A new member may feel they have much to learn. In fact, we often have even more to learn from them. New perspectives, sensibilities, and questions reveal worlds we could not see before. We therefore place no particular emphasis on a specific background or title. Experience and skills matter, of course. Key Responsibilities
- Developing brand strategies, concepts, and overarching creative visions
- Creating corporate and visual identities (CI / VI) and graphic design
- Designing and producing websites, digital products, and user interfaces
- Planning and producing photography, film, CGI, and sound
- Creating books, culture books, and editorial design
- Developing concepts and directing architecture, spaces, and exhibitions
- Designing and directing products, furniture, and merchandise
- Conducting research, workshops, and editorial activities
- Planning and carrying out new ventures and cultural projects
Experience We Welcome
- Professional experience in graphic and web design
- Experience with corporate and visual identity (CI / VI) and branding projects
- Experience producing photography, film, CGI, or 3D CGI
- Experience in editorial design, publishing, or editing
- Experience in UI / UX or front-end development
- An interest in, or professional experience with, architecture and spatial design
- An interest in, or professional experience with, product design, furniture, and crafts
- An ongoing commitment to independent creative work or research
Open Position
Designer
A designer puts into practice everything they can do in pursuit of Gestalting. Working beyond the boundaries of web or graphic design, they refine their individuality, take initiative, and cultivate a sensitivity to beauty. They bring philosophy into the details and realize new stories of wholeness in society.
Eligibility
- No specific educational background required
- No age restrictions
Experience in branding, design, editing, architecture, project management, or product development is welcome.
What matters is a connection with our philosophy and a conviction to nurture beautiful stories together.
Employment Terms
- Permanent employment (with a three-month probationary period)
- Flexible working hours
- Salary increases, in principle twice a year
- Fiscal year-end bonus
Terms will be determined based on experience and ability.
Work Location
Flexible: work from the office, home, elsewhere in Japan, or overseas
We do not place emphasis on closely managing where or when people work. What matters is the role you take on and the value you create. We ask each person to understand their role and make the most of the time available. Compensation and roles are determined by results, ways of working, objective measures, and the trust and evaluation of colleagues. Our aim is not to create order through control, but an environment in which each person can work autonomously, fulfill a role that is their own, and enjoy a lighter sense of freedom.
