Gatherings for Gestalting

Awakening Vitality, Together

Modern society has gained unprecedented access to information, convenience, and rationality, yet we are gradually losing our connection to human sensibility, personality, community spirit, and the fundamental question of "what does it mean to live?" We have been experiencing a sense of dissonance as we work on forming companies, organizations, regions, cultures, products, and spaces. This is the realization that while there are many discussions about how we want to improve the world, there are surprisingly few opportunities to share questions about what kind of way of living or being is beautiful. Patmos exists to reconnect this fragmented world and awaken the vital sense that sleeps within individuals and communities. We call this practice "Gestalting."

Gestalting™ is the endeavor to grasp the relationships between parts and move toward a greater whole through truth, goodness, and beauty. What we aim for is not merely design or consulting. It is through diverse practices such as ideas, businesses, culture, organizations, spaces, products, editing, and architecture that we re-examine our relationships with each other, with communities, and with the world. We believe that when different personalities and specializations resonate with each other, a whole that one person could never see emerges gradually. And this whole is also not a completed thing but changes over time while continuously generating new relationships. We seek to nurture this idea and practice together with like-minded partners for future inheritance. What kind of world do we want to leave for the future? How do we want to live? What kind of beauty do we want to practice? We wish to share these questions while observing together, creating together, and nurturing the future together.

Cultivating Beautiful Stories Over Time

We do not see design merely as a means of solving problems. Of course, it is important to address the challenges facing businesses and organizations and to envision better futures. But what we are truly engaging with are the philosophies, cultures, and human sensibilities that lie beneath them. Great brands and organizations are guided by coherent philosophies. Great architecture and products embody the aesthetic sensibilities of those who create them. Great cultures are shaped by the accumulated practices and memories of people over time. These things move us, give us courage, and sometimes even change the choices we make or the way we see the world. We believe this is the essence of design. Design is the practice of creating stories that bring life into motion. For people and organizations to change in meaningful ways, we need time—to question together, observe together, and put ideas into practice together. This is why we value not only solving problems, but also the relationships, dialogue, learning, and practice that emerge along the way. What kind of world do we want to leave for the future? What kind of life, and what way of being, do we find beautiful? By continuing to engage with these questions, we hope to cultivate beautiful stories over time. If you want to explore the possibilities of people, organizations, and cultures with a long-term perspective; if you want to keep questioning what it means to live and exist beautifully—we look forward to meeting you.

For Those Who Wish to Walk Alongside Us Over Time

We are looking to meet people with whom we can learn, think, and practice together—and continue walking alongside one another over time. What we value is a sense of lightness and freedom. Not freedom simply as the absence of constraints, but the freedom that comes from understanding one’s role, embracing one’s individuality and strengths, and contributing to the people around us and to a larger whole. To ask your own questions, work with your own hands, and remain persistent through failure and difficulty until the work is done. More than ability alone, we value these everyday actions and habits. We believe that by understanding and refining our individual qualities, we gradually cultivate character and integrity. Over time, these practices become virtues of their own. It is equally important to ask how we should exist not only for ourselves, but in relation to others and society—to move someone through our practice, sometimes give them courage, and inspire the next act of practice.

We also value being moved by the beauty of nature; encountering architecture, craft, art, literature, philosophy, and culture; questioning what we find beautiful; and continually cultivating our sensibilities. In time, these sensibilities become creativity, and through practice, a force that can inspire others in turn. We value what accumulates slowly, like layers of the earth. Rather than short-term results or momentary recognition, we care about the trust, culture, philosophy, and stories that can only be cultivated over time. We hope to meet those who resonate with Gestalting™, who seek to contribute to a greater whole through their distinct qualities, and who wish to carry that practice forward into the future. These are the people we hope to meet—and walk alongside for a long time to come.
